Abstract
Day Zero for food on the table – this clearly is a tough theme which can certainly evoke negative reactions. Working with developments which are continually unfolding in certain countries throughout the world means this scenario is not too far-fetched. The role-players in the value chain should be informed of the importance of a sound policy environment. This could be achieved by means of communication and hopefully the result will be more informed people that can influence their governments to do what they have to do namely create the much-needed environment where the private entrepreneurs will have the confidence to invest and build the economy. Day Zero could well become a certainty if a rapid reality check is not forthcoming from government’s very soon. Concern exists that if government’s don’t apply the correct policy to create an economic environment wherein the private sector do have the confidence to invest and thereafter apply the principals that are needed to produce sufficient food the outcome will be too expensive to accommodate. We have to make sure that we apply the best practices taking into consideration the growing population of the world to make sure that we do have food security in the future.
